|  Several years ago someone was attacked by a shark. There was a big hullabaloo over this particular attack in the media and as a result every evening seemed to result in word of yet another shark attack (or three). You’d have thought the oceans were running red with some sort of newly waged aquatic civil war against humanity.
The reports tapered off after a month or so. Apparently we won the war. (Or we didn’t and sharks are now disguised as 1 in 4 people you see on the street…!)
You see this sort of thing a lot. Otherwise common, but quirky events have one particularly high profile story and every reporter with a pen and pad is scooping up similar stories in the hopes of recapturing that spark again. “If they liked THAT story, they’ll surely want to hear more like it!”
It’s kind of like when Hollywood gets into one of it’s moods and starts churning out movies with similar genres in a short time span to cash in on what they percieve to be a potential hit at the time. We’ll have three or four water-themed movies, or alien invasion movies, or scary movies, or movies about people with only one limb, etc.
Lately we’ve had stories about large quantities of birds dying all at once. Lakebeds with hundreds of thousands of fish all belly-up. Stories from around the globe, no less. USA, Canada, Sweden. I’m sure there’s more, but I stopped keeping track.
So that brings me to the main question of this piece, which I’m sure you’ve already pieced together, you clever, attractive reader, you: is it at all possible that this sort of thing happens all the time, and it’s only seems like the end of the friggin end of the world because people are reporting on a global level events that would normally only warrant a paragraph in a local newspaper?
Normally I would take the time to do a bit of research on this and try to answer it myself, but honestly I’m exhausted by the topic. Armchair conspriacy detectives have already laced every inch of this with Conspiracy Bingo buzzwords (HAARP, gov’t testing, etc.) that it makes me feel a bit poo about it all… it’s like psychic mud to me. Hard to maneuver through, so you drive around and try to avoid it. Or you stay home.
