Updates and Such
Welp, I started two new projects on Sunday.

The first is this new toy over here.

Basically it's a tool for budding datamashers and/or bitmangler artists to glitch the shit out of images interactively.  You'll be able to download the results and, hopefully, save them to Imageshack or Flickr.  I'm doing only one kind of glitching (or frying, a term they used to use for turning the Atari 2600 on and off rapidly causing crazy ass glitches) at the moment, but I plan to support all sorts of shit.

WARNING: It's not done, and I left it in the state it was when I left for work. It's unoptimized, slow, buttons are broken, and features are completely missing. I'll work on it tonight.  Consider what's there a teaser.

The second is somethingI tweeted about already, but I'll formally mention it here: The Ubiquitous Fortyseven!

No, it's not about me, but rather that magical ever-present numerical value, 47!  It's what inspired my nick, after all. ;)

Basically back when this all started, around the mid-90's I was reading the 47 Society page and learning all about the number, since it appeared on Star Trek a whole lot.  The reason for that was because of some of the writers and their connection to Pomona College which had a big thing about how all values are equal to 47, and the number is present in our lives everywhere like some mad puppeteer pulling our strings.

I, too, noticed it everywhere at the time!  It was an enjoyable era, seeing that friendly pair of digits in almost everything I was doing.  (SPOILER: However, I came to understand that it's a well-known mental tick called "confirmation bias", and not a supernatural numerical conspiracy.)

Despite breaking down the wall of mysticism over it, I still liked the number, like an old pal, so I took it as a temporary nick on IRC at some point in 1988 and, well, it stuck.

I'd been looking for an excuse to play around with the Tumblr blogging site, and last night I thought I'd just start collecting 47 sightings, just like the 47 Society page used to do.  There's a couple other sites doing this already (one of which is even already on Tumblr; something I didn't notice until it was up and running), but I don't really care.  It's just for fun, and frankly projects like this, 9 times out of 10, tend to peter out from lack of interest pretty quick.  So we'll see.

That said, submit your own 47 sighting!  As many as you'd like!  Be it a photo or video clip, just be sure the number 47 is involved in some capacity -- I don't mind if it's blatant (the number 47 by itself on a wall) or subtle (an image of the 47th state, New Mexico).  It's all good, and again, it's just meant to be for fun.

It is funny how you say that certain numbers keep reoccurring. I usually encounter the number 420 throughout my week. No lie. About six months ago I thought of starting an "Instance420" community here, but then I realized it would be a dead community.
